The 2019/2020 school year presented us with many challenges, from province wide strikes to the unprecedented arrival of Covid-19. When the time of year arrived to celebrate my sons achievements, specifically his kindergarten graduation, I knew I needed to do something extra special. As much as we tried to keep the school routine as “normal” as possible at home, it just didn’t feel the same. There would be no formal acknowledgement, no end of year celebration and that’s when I got to work. Here’s how I put together our little celebration!

I wanted a keepsake, one picture that I could proudly put up for all to see. I searched Pinterest tirelessly for inspiration and ideas started flowing. It all started with a cap! I’ve created a guide below that includes step by step instructions on how you can recreate this at home. All you need is a little cardstock, glue and yarn. I happened to have a black silk robe that worked well for the graduation gown but if you don’t have one you can also use a black garbage bag. Simply cut out two long slots to fit the arms and a “V” for the neck. That’s it – super easy! I wanted a couple of specific shots of my son in his graduation attire. I created a couple of props to aid in achieving my vision; the 2020 banner and a framed kindergarten graduate sign. He held both so proudly and cooperated the whole time, my vision quickly came to life! I loved the sign I created for him to hold so much that I ended up getting it made into a lawn sign. I reused the mini balloon garland that I made for the photo shoot and attached it to the sign. It’s super cute and fun! The sign sits proudly on our lawn.

To take the festivities to another level myself and a couple of my mom friends decided to have a social distance picnic with pizza and cake to give these kids the hurrah they deserved. We spent a lovely afternoon together at the park (at a safe distance) and the kids were thrilled. To cap it off, his teacher also made a special visit to wish him well, a very lovely gesture that meant the world to us. Just like that, another school year has come to an end. We learned so much together, grade 1 here he comes!
